A report is an account of an event or a series of events, or a summary of the conclusions to be drawn from a survey or set of statistics. It could be a summary of the findings in a 5urvey on the eating habits of children aged between twelve and fifteen, or a condensed account of the school football team’sactivities throughout the year. You might produce a report for the school magazine or a newspaper. You need to be logical and accurate and have the ability to prune your words down to a minimum.A well-written report must indicate the issue it deals with, and it must have a logical arrangement of facts The reasoning must be convincing and appropriately expressed. The arguments must be arranged properly and it must have definite and clear recommendations. A haphazard arrangement will make the report less intelligible and reduce its force.

Points to Remember :

▶The key to writing a successful report is to organise your facts clearly.

▶The sections or paragraphs of a report should be shorter than they usually are when you are writing stories or essays. This helps the reader to assess the information quickly.

▶A report is written for a particular readership. Make sure you know who the readership is before you start.

▶Note whether the report is a first person or third person report.

▶A report should address six basic questions, viz: who, what, when, where, why and how.


There are two types of report writings :

1. Newspaper report 

(Types of Newspaper report are : Crime report, Event report & Accident report)

2. Travel Brochure


1. Newspaper report

● The news reports start with the most important idea. The most important information comes first, the second important information comes next, and so on. This is called inverted pyramid style.

The Lead : Who /What → When / Where

The Body : Why / How

● Since the purpose of a newspaper report is to make the information clear to the readers, it deals strictly with the subject and there is no room for personal comments, or any direct address to the reader.

● News reports are straightforward. They are written in a simple style that uses shorter and simpler sentences than other types of writing.

● It usually starts with a headline.

● It often contains written records or interviews which are reported word for word. Either speech marksare used correctly or the interview is converted into reported speech.


2. Travel Brochure

● Travel Brochure starts with attractive description of the place.

● Since the purpose of a travel brochure is to make the information related to the given destination clear, it deals strictly with subjects which question demands.

● Brief description about the place, tourists attractions, best time to visit and how to visit.

Valuables, Cash Looted from Jeweller’s House

Thieves decamped with jewellery, valuables and cash worth over ₹5 lakh from the residence of a jeweler in Sector-40 under Civil Lines police station area in Ludhiana. The family was away in a Delhi hospital, where a relative was admitted. Jeweller B.C. Sood, who lives in House No. 163 of C-Block of Sector-40, owns a reputed jewellery store, Hans Jewellers, in the old city. He was shocked to find his house ransacked when he returned home after two days. All the almirah locks were broken and good strewn all over in the house. The grill of the kitchen window was missing, presumably; that was the mode of entry and exit.

The robbers had helped themselves with gold worth ₹2 lakh, ₹50,000 in cash, costly electronic gadgets and some artefacts. Even some expensive garments and upholster; were missing.

According to the residents, over 50 thefts have taken place in this area in the 135′ five months, but the police have failed to solve most of the cases so far. S.K. Sahni, the spokesperson of the Residents Welfare Association, who lives in the adjacent house was the one who informed the police and the Sood family.

He said, ”I saw four men in a car, in front of the house at midnight. When I called out to them from my balcony, they looked alarmed and fled.” However, due to darkness he couldn’t see their faces and the car clearly, he added.

The police have, however. nabbed two of the bandits who had looted a Santro car last weak, while two other thieves had Slipped from the police dragnet. Four bandlts in a Wagon R had looted a Santro carfrom the Golf Course roundabout on August 4 when a Santro driver Joginder had been threatened at gunpoint by the thieves. The culprits are suspected to have some connection with this incident as well.

Mumbai Juniors pulled off an incredible two-wicket victory relying on the tail enders to salvage some pride in the seventh and final cricket one-dayer against the Punjab Panthers here tonight.In a low-scoring thriller, Mumbai first bundled out Punjab for a paltry 193 in 41.3 overs, riding on Ramesh Kiran’s career-best 6 for 37 and then staged a dramatic recovery to overhaul the target with four overs to spare and reduce the margin to 4-2 in the series.

The team owed its remarkable Victory to left-arm spinner Kiran, who produced a mesmerising spell to derail the opposition batting and then was involved in a cheeky 52-runs unbeaten partnership with AyubKhan (31 not out) to guide the team home.

The Punjab Panthers, who have already wrapped up the series, had the Mumbaikars tottering at 64 for 6and it seemed only a matter of time for the inevitable but the game took a dramatic turn with Robin Jacob (47) leading the recovery.

The seventh wicket pair added 65 runs in 13.1 overs to take the score past the IOO-run mark. After Jacob was out at 129 and Pratap Singh (19) on 143, Ayub and Kiran kept the team in the hunt and finally steered them home with an unbroken half-century . stand for the ninth wicket.

Constant fours and sixes during the partnership kept the packed gathering in good cheer. However, conceit was broken by left-arm slow bowler Ishmeet Singh, who trapped Jacob with an arm ball at 129, the end looked near and the match swung further the Panthers’ Way when Pratap was sent back by Govil.But Ayub and Ramesh Kiran had other ideas as they guided the Mumbai Juniors to thrilling victory.Kiran’s career-best haul and unbeaten 21 runs earned him the Man of the Match award.
